Who We Are

The Lehigh Valley Employment Coalition started in 1996 by Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services and is comprised of a group of professionals dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities in the workforce and their employers.

There are 15.1 million people of working age living with disabilities in the U.S., so the research suggests that if companies embrace disability inclusion, they will gain access to a new talent pool of more than 10.7 million people.

The Lehigh Valley Employment Coalition is a collaboration of educators, service providers, supports coalition organizations, family members, self-advocates, DHS and OVR, all dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities through employment.

MYTH

It will be difficult to supervise employees with disabilities.

FACT

A recent study found 82% of managers said employees with disabilities were no harder to supervise than employees without.

MYTH

People with disabilities are

not reliable.

FACT

People with disabilities tend to remain on the job and maintain better levels

of attendance.

MYTH

People with disabilities can only do simple, repetitive jobs or can only do light

duty work.

FACT

People with disabilities have a variety of skills to offer, which differ from individual to individual, as with everyone else.

MYTH

All people with disabilities require job accommodations, and they are expensive.

FACT

Studies show less than 1/4 of employees with disabilities need accommodations. For those who do, 2/3 cost less than $500, with many costing nothing at all. Tax incentives are also available.
